Łukta is a village on the river of the same name on the road from Olsztyn to Morąg. Located among many lakes (some big tunnel-valley lakes: Isąg, Marąg, Gil, Długie, Łoby, Tabórz, Ruskie and Szeląg) and extensive forest areas. Within the communal grounds there are three nature reserves: “Sosny Taborskie” (near village Tabórz, with its impressive high-rise “mast” pines reaching as high as 40 metres; often 250 years old. Their sleek, smooth trunks free from any bumps or knots, in the times of the sailing ships were considered the best material to make masts of. It is believed that the idea to construct the Ostróda-Elbląg Canal was inspired by the need to quickly ship the timber to seaside shipbuilders'. Another attraction in Łukta is beaver sanctuary on the River Pasłęka and Isąg Lake. On Lake Marąg there's the Lime Island – a landscape reserve with some very old lime trees and a colony of cormorants and Grey Herons. The most interesting historic buildings in Łukta include the Gothic Castle built by the Teutonic Order which got into protestant hands around 1525. After 1945, it was taken over by the Roman-Catholics. In front of the western façade there is a tower with wooden upper part, steep walls and a rounded bell cupola. Inside the church see the Renaissance altar, 18th-century gravestone and the baroque plafond. |
